The golden color of the exquisite white wine produced here, the undulating landscape of the Danube Hills, and the purist materials of concrete, glass, and aluminum characterize the architecture of Château Rúbaň estate in Slovakia. The simple straight lines of the golden facade elements Prefalz/Falzonal enhance the radiant impression of the facade of the new winery building, which reflects the surrounding nature and wine.
Château Rúbaň has long been internationally renowned for its outstanding wines. Now, in addition to delicious wine products, it also attracts visitors to Rúbaň with its valuable and original architecture.
Through a bold reconstruction of the old estate, consisting of several unappealing buildings previously used for military and religious purposes, prominent Slovak architect Zoltán Bartal blended an architectural cuvée of exceptional quality. The golden facade elements Prefalz/Falzonal add charm to the complex. The architect discovered them while searching for a material that would appear exceptional with its natural shine. It was meant to be durable and not leave undesirable marks on the plaster of the facade or the floor. Bartal found it in the mayagold color from the facade elements Prefalz/Falzonal. This architectural gold PREFA was already used in both the first phases of the overall reconstruction of the complex.
NATURE IN A GOLDEN MIRROR The soberly elegant chateau, as the center of the estate and guesthouse, was reconstructed by Bartal in 2014. The roof of the wellness part of the guesthouse features a golden covering made of Prefalz/Falzonal with a double standing seam, and the "golden" impression is also created by the wine cellar, where this material was used for the facade, roof, parapet cladding, and ceiling. The last to undergo reconstruction was the winery building, thus completing the ensemble into one large whole.
The architect's inspiration for creating a representative building was the pleasure of wine, the ancient art of winemaking, the latest construction technologies, and the traditions of vineyard landscapes. The golden facade elements evoking poured wine, reflective glass, and the reflection of the hilly vineyards create an atmosphere that is appreciated by both casual visitors and true connoisseurs of wine and architecture at Château Rúbaň. And the winery building is a mirror of this atmosphere.
PRECISE PLANNING Bartal prepared highly precise laying plans for all facade surfaces and ceiling claddings. A challenge for the roofer was the continuous seams. Each seam starting at the foundation had to continue in an uninterrupted line through the ceiling and wall as per the architect's specifications. The cladding made of Prefalz/Falzonal elements with angular standing seams was mounted on solid sheathing of 22 mm thickness, behind which is a ventilated space of 50 mm width and thermal insulation of 160 mm thickness. "For the four-member team of roofing specialists, it was no walk in the park, as at most three conical shapes could be pre-profiled at any given time," recalls Tomáš Matušek, head of the contracting company Matutomi from Komárno, about the demanding specialist work lasting nearly half a year.
The roofing company located near Bartal's architectural office in Komárno was able to transform the project's idea into reality with their craftsmanship and the material’s easy processability. "The Prefalz/Falzonal material convinces with its malleability, extraordinarily easy formability, and the ability to create joints resistant to rain without screws, gluing, or welding," says Tomáš Matušek about the facade of the new winery made of Prefalz/Falzonal with an area of 650 m². "This is particularly advantageous in the case of architecturally unusual facades."
WAVES OF HILLS AND SPARKLING WINE Bartal set out to capture the landscape and the character of its wine in the buildings of the estate. The objects connect with each other visually, including the facades that lighten the massiveness of the basic purist concept. Across the full height of the guesthouse building, there is a glass facade on the side facing the forest, accurately reflecting nature. The entrance space with striking shimmering aluminum facade elements made of Prefalz/Falzonal in the color of mayagold serves as an architectural promise of the opulent flavors of wine awaiting visitors in the tasting glasses inside. The specific undulating optics of the new winery, with irregularly running seams on the aluminum facade and graphic lines on the concrete walls, gives the essentially monolithic building a touch of lightness and transparency.
GOLD IN A GLASS The appearance of the winery building is predominantly shaped by the striking surfaces of the golden facade elements PREFA Prefalz/Falzonal with a two-layer baked coating of just 0.7 mm thickness. The effect is indeed striking. The varied widths of the conical bands create the impression of fabric storage. Their length visually lifts the dynamically appearing facade upward. The golden color evokes the fruity taste of white wine, which is characteristic of this area and is a top product of the Château Rúbaň winery.
VALUABLE MATERIAL When asked why he chose the aluminum elements PREFA, Zoltán Bartal responds: "I was looking for a material that would be visually impressive and simultaneously technically perfect and durable on all buildings, both outdoors and indoors. And that would add value to the object." The extraordinary golden facade elements Prefalz/Falzonal met these requirements best and had just the shade and level of gloss that Bartal desired. However, valuable does not always mean expensive. A 40-year product warranty, almost complete maintenance-free status, resistance to weather conditions, and environmentally produced recyclable aluminum material make the facade more than a profitable long-term investment with a quick return.
MAGICAL WALLS OPEN EYES Bartal designed the winery as a multifunctional building. Besides the wine cellar, there is now also a visitor space that can be used as a wine shop or for seminars and various events, as needed. It is a place that opens the eyes of those who love the charming landscape to the outdoor beauty of the estate with its ancient rare trees in the park. "In the entire complex of buildings, the combination of old and new played a significant role. The winery as such holds much history and ancient craftsmanship, and we wanted to capture that in this building," says Bartal. And if he had to add something to the already perfect architectural ensemble of the estate, he would build a chapel. For Saint Urban, the patron of wine Château Rúbaň.
