Leading European experts in modular architecture, led by German university professor and architect Han Slawik and Dutch architect Caroline Bijvoet, will visit Bratislava as part of CONECO.
If you tell someone in the Czech Republic or Slovakia that you live in a container, they might look at you with concern, wondering if you're okay. However, in Germany or the Netherlands, they would understand and begin to ask questions. They might even start to share stories about their own container, in which they enjoy living and sometimes take with them on vacation. This is not a caravan, but rather what is known as modular construction or modular architecture.
Modular architecture is widely used around the world, as its benefits are completely indisputable. Easy transport, low costs, the ability to relocate the construction without issues, quick and dry construction, and, last but not least, an attractive appearance with a touch of patina. An international conference titled “Modular Architecture in the City of the 21st Century” will focus on this area of architecture, which is still in its infancy in the Czech Republic and virtually unknown in Slovakia. It will take place on March 30, 2011, in Bratislava, with the participation of leading European architects dedicated to this specific area of architecture.
Thus, the German guru of container architecture, Professor Han Slawik from Hanover, who has dedicated his entire life to modular and container architecture, will come to Bratislava and can justly be considered the father of German “container architecture.” This star will be joined at the conference not only by Czech experts from fields such as architecture, sociology, or art, but also by the head of the Institute of Urbanism of FA STU and Urban Planning of FA STU Bratislava, Professor Bohumil Kováč, and the charismatic Dutch architect Caroline Bijvoet, who impressed the Dutch Union of Architects with her charming restaurant “Wijn of Water,” built from refurbished shipping containers in Rotterdam, which nominated her for the Dutch Building of the Year 2006.
Join us to discover container and modular architecture at the international conference, where you will learn not only what architecture can be built from modules, but also how containers are manufactured, what parameters they must meet, and how quickly a house from modules can be constructed, whether it is a kindergarten, a family home, or a restaurant. Register at www.modularch.sk. Admission is free! Capacity is limited!
The conference is organized with the support of the main partner KOMA MODULAR CONSTRUCTION, major partners FERMACELL and CONECO, event partners: Elmo, Oknotherm, Nemetschek, Schmachtl. The main media partner is Eurostav publishing house and the magazine ARCH, with media partners including ArchiBox.sk, Architecture.sk, Archinet.sk, DEVELOPMENT NEWS SLOVAKIA, UzemnePlany.sk, and EARCH.CZ. The conference is held in cooperation with the Slovak Chamber of Architects and the Slovak Chamber of Civil Engineers, the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Civil Engineering STU Bratislava, the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU in Prague, and EARCH.CZ.
