In June 2018, a completely unique multifunctional space, Cubex Centrum Praha, was opened in Prague. The quality of this new congress and event destination was confirmed by the prestigious international competition, the 9th Global Eventex Awards, in which Cubex won in the "new venue" category just a few months after its establishment.
The modern building Trimaran in Prague's Pankrác features a unique main hall for conferences, social events, and more, accommodating up to 1,000 people. Combined with adjacent smaller lounge rooms, the total capacity of Cubex Centrum Praha is 1,200 people, and by using halls in the neighboring City Conference Center, which is connected to Cubex via a short corridor, an event for up to 1,700 guests can be organized. Cubex Centrum covers a total of 3,700 m² of conference and exhibition space. The versatility of the space and the ability to divide it into smaller halls are a given, but the uniqueness of Cubex lies in its design and perfect technical equipment.
"As the name suggests, the interior design of the Cubex Center was inspired by cubism," stated the center's director, Jaroslava Křížková, adding: "We wanted to offer our clients something unique, unconventional for conference interiors, and at the same time typical for Prague or the Czech Republic. This was also the brief for the architectural competition."
"Even during the preparation of the competition study, it was clear to us that such a large exhibition and gathering space must have a strong underlying concept to avoid being drowned in monotony. The idea of a cubist paraphrase was thus suggested as a specificity of Prague architecture, exceptional on a global scale, that would attract potential clientele and visitors to the center and clearly distinguish similar projects by its uniqueness," says the center's chief architect, Mr. Hudák from the architectural studio 4a architekti.
"We used cubist decor in a highly transformed form, it was more about its destruction and reassembly. Perhaps only the shape of the sinks in the restrooms is a literal reproduction of cubism in its symmetrical patterns that repeat strictly. The overall impression of the space is thus more deconstructivist with cubist elements. The diversity of the interior is emphasized by a multimedia concept that allows all spaces to be completed according to the client's wishes with an endless array of visual and acoustic effects," adds architect Hudák.
The main goal of any architecture should primarily be its functionality, and in the case of Cubex, also its versatility in relation to the variety of services offered. The spaces must accommodate both large conferences and exhibition activities, as well as gala dinners and corporate events. "In particular, the main hall must correspond with this versatility, also from the perspective of building physics, such as acoustics and lighting," believes architect Hudák, adding: "At the same time, it was necessary to have the option to divide the space into smaller halls while maintaining the required parameters, such as ensuring a clean space without columns. The seemingly chaotic structure of some interior elements, such as the ceiling of the hall, incorporates regular grids for the installation of lighting and ventilation, as well as the tracks for movable partitions serving to separate individual spaces. Ultimately, this mix of chaos and order creates a functional whole with a significant impression that it leaves on the observer."
The creation of any space involves dealing with many challenges. Cubex Centrum was no exception. "The main challenges of processing this interior lay in the integration of functional and aesthetic dimensions of the design. Realizing the Chameleon concept, which enables the transformation of the entire interior's appearance in accordance with the client's requirements for the rented space, was no less demanding," summarizes architect Hudák about the main challenges.
The cubist-inspired interior was one of the reasons why Cubex received the highest rating among new conference centers. Clean straight lines and perforated surfaces are used not only on walls and furnishings but also in the catering offerings, graphic design, and in the inventory and decorations. "Just as cubism was sometimes labeled as an impractical style, some people told us that we were unnecessarily complicating the construction of the center with technically demanding design requirements and consequently maintenance. But precisely those 'impractical' buildings today attract tourists from around the world, just as our unconventional Cubex captures the attention of clients from both home and abroad precisely because it is different," concluded Jaroslava Křížková. Not only inspiration from history sets Cubex Centrum apart from the competition. Modern technologies, represented for example by the 102 m² projection area of the Media Wall, or the aforementioned Chameleon Concept, which adjusts the color scheme of the spaces to the client's needs, make Cubex a place that satisfies even the most demanding clients.
