The Brno councilors selected a designer for the multifunctional hall on Ponavu

Brno - Brno city councillors have chosen a designer for the athletics and cycling hall on the banks of the Svratka River. The contract worth 65 million crowns excluding VAT was awarded to the company ov architekti, which succeeded last year with its design of the sports facility in an architectural competition. The project documentation should be completed next year. Construction could begin in 2028, said city councillor Tomáš Aberl (TOP 09), who oversees sports. The hall, costing around 1.5 billion crowns, could provide a base for the Brno cycling club TJ Favorit, which currently operates at its velodrome in Pisárky.

The multipurpose hall, which according to Aberl will accommodate about 1,200 spectators, is expected to have two above-ground and one underground level. The main sports venue will be on the ground floor, while the training area and parking spaces will be located in the underground section.

In the future, the sports facility could become the new home for Brno club TJ Favorit, which currently has its base at the velodrome in Pisárky. The original intention of the city was to buy the velodrome. It wanted to build a football stadium in its place and relocate cyclists to the Svratka River area. In the past, some cyclists protested against the relocation. However, Aberl stated today that the velodrome is not the subject of negotiations and the priority remains the construction of the football stadium in Lužánky.

The chairman of the TJ Favorit club, Ladislav Macek, told ČTK today that they would be pleased with the new cycling hall on the Svratka River. According to him, discussions will still take place about whether they will operate in the new sports facility or remain at the velodrome.

In addition to cyclists, the hall is also expected to serve athletes. "This missing element for athletes would resolve the possibility of training during the winter months not only for elite athletes but also for youth. Currently, it is necessary to travel to Prague or Ostrava for training, and we aren't even talking about the possibility of organizing indoor competitions directly in Brno," added Petr Kotyza, chairman of the South Moravian Regional Athletics Association.
