Brno – The project for the construction of a new cycling oval in Brno in Komárov, costing 890 million crowns, has completed documentation for the zoning decision. After consultations with relevant authorities, the processing of comments and the selection procedure for the contractor for the building permit documentation and the actual construction will follow. Construction could start in 2021 to 2022, said Jaroslav Suchý, the city councilor for sports, to ČTK today.

The current cycling oval, which is 400 meters long, is located at the exhibition grounds and is only partially covered. The new velodrome will have a track 250 meters long, will be fully covered, and will offer seating for about 2,000 spectators. Cyclists have long been striving for the new circuit.

Originally, the oval was expected to cost around 400 million crowns, but it now amounts to double that because it will also include accommodation, a restaurant, a gym, and an hypobaric center inside. In this center, cyclists can practice on a stationary bike in a specially adjusted room under conditions comparable to a mountainous environment, among others. The project will also include flood protection measures. The city is negotiating for support from the state.

In Komárov, near Hněvkovského Street, there is already a sports complex that includes a cyclo-cross track, inline skating, a training field for baseball, multipurpose fields, or a soccer field within the FC Sparta Brno complex.
