Cheb - The city of Cheb will continue preparing the project for the extension of the Cheb theater building according to the design by architect Luboš Mašek. The city leadership informed about this today on its website. The project is set to proceed despite some professional public dissent regarding the project's design, and the initiative Vision for Cheb has even created a petition against the continuation of the plan.

The aim of the project is to replace the already inadequate space of Studio D with new facilities for smaller performances. According to the project, the new extension of the 19th-century building should be completed at the rear of the complex, and architect Mašek's design presents a more modern appearance that raises doubts.

"Given that the commission (for spatial planning and strategic development) did not decide to announce an architectural competition, the leadership of the city of Cheb has commissioned Luboš Mašek to complete the project for the extension of the West Bohemian Theater building in Cheb, with the understanding that the proposal will subsequently be submitted to the committee for spatial planning and strategic development, and a decision will be made on the next steps," stated the city leadership on the website.

However, the initiative Vision for Cheb pointed out today that the commission did not support the continuation of the current project of architect Mašek either. "The minutes from the commission meeting show that the commission rejected both directions – both the competition and the continuation of the current proposal. Despite this, the city leadership decided to assign Mašek to continue work on the extension. We perceive this approach as problematic, especially given the lack of clear support from both professional and civic spaces," representatives of the initiative stated today in a press release.

The city called upon architect Luboš Mašek to prepare the proposal through direct assignment, without consulting at least three suppliers or conducting an open tender, the initiative notes. According to Cheb's deputy mayor, Michal Pospíšil (ODS), however, the city leadership proceeded in such a way as to realize the plan, which currently has the support of the city leadership, in real-time while it still has full backing.

Representatives of the Vision for Cheb initiative believe that the city leadership will reconsider its approach and take into account the strong response from both the professional and lay public. "At the same time, we offer the city active cooperation – we are ready to assist in facilitating contacts with the Czech Chamber of Architects or other institutions that can professionally assist with organizing the competition," stated Linda Polomová, David Poloch, and Libor Dušek on behalf of the initiative today.
