Prague – Near the Kolbenova metro station in Prague's Vysočany district, the developer AFI has begun construction of a kindergarten. Upon completion, it will be taken over by the municipal district of Prague 9. The kindergarten will have four classrooms with a capacity of 96 children. It is expected to be finished in November 2027. This was reported by AFI's media representative Kateřina Slavíčková.
In the two-story building, there will also be facilities for a children's sports group and a meal delivery area. The kindergarten will have its own garden with play elements. The architectural design was developed by the Ortogonal studio. "The project will also include the construction of a new soundproof wall, which will improve the environment not only for the children but also for the residents in the area," wrote Prague 9 Mayor Tomáš Portlík (ODS) on Facebook.
According to AFI CR's director Karin Šalev Šogolová, the construction of the kindergarten confirms that the company wants to develop the area comprehensively. "We are building apartments, office buildings, retail spaces, and we are also investing in infrastructure and public space, which enhances the quality of life for the entire community," she stated.
Prague 9 is also completing a new elementary and kindergarten in Hrdlořezy on Zelené Město. It will be a primary school. Construction began in the fall, and if there are no delays, students should start there in September. Because an internal road ring is planned to run beneath it, it is being built from modular containers.
The municipal district is simultaneously renovating the building of the former National Pedagogical Institute, which once housed a kindergarten and will return there. The building is next to the Novoborská Elementary School in Vysočany. "For a long time, we have been negotiating with the Ministry of Education about whether it would be possible to obtain the building for loan so it could serve children from Prague 9 again. After more than a year and a half of negotiations, several meetings, and approval from the government location commission, which decides on the handling of state property, we finally succeeded," Portlík stated.
He added that the kindergarten will have two speech therapy classes, which have long been lacking in this part of Prague. According to the mayor, the renovation is slightly behind schedule, but if no further delays occur, it should be completed in November.
Prague 9 has also obtained a building permit for the conversion of a former printing house on Kovářská Street into a kindergarten and the Tesla II kindergarten, which will be part of a residential complex on the site of the former factory. Last June, the municipal district took over the first kindergarten in this area. Thanks to contributions, it is expected to acquire three.
Prague 9 is located in the northeast of the metropolis and has nearly 70,000 residents. It comprises the cadastral area of Prosek and parts of the cadastral areas of Vysočany, Hrdlořezy, Střížkov, Hloubětín, Libeň, and Malešice. Due to intensive residential construction in former brownfields in Vysočany, the capacity of both elementary and kindergartens is being increased. In 2023, Prague 9 opened a new Elektra elementary school on Sousedíkova Street for 800 children. Next to it, plans are underway for the construction of a second building for 800 children at the elementary school and approximately 360 students at the high school.
