Olomouc – The Olomouc city hall has announced a public tender for the first phase of the reconstruction of the crematorium in the Neředín district, which includes the purchase of two cremation lines and their maintenance for three years. The tender has an estimated value of 21 million Czech crowns, excluding VAT. CTK obtained this information today from the public procurement database.

The crematorium is owned by the city and its operation is managed by a private funeral service. In April, the council approved a plan for the future operation of the crematorium, according to which the city will take over its operations from the private funeral service starting next year, with the Technical Services of the City of Olomouc taking responsibility. The plan also includes its modernization, estimated to cost several tens of millions of crowns. The investment will concern the reconstruction of technologies, especially the incineration furnace and cooling equipment, as well as the crematorium's facilities.

The last major renovation of the Olomouc crematorium took place in 2003. The condition of the facility was assessed two years ago by experts from Atelier 99. They found that the cremation technologies, air conditioning, heating, cooling, freezing equipment, and most internal utilities are nearing the end of their lifespan. The study also pointed out inadequate electrical installations, most of which date back to the 1970s. Other identified issues include the peeling of the ceramic façade tiles and outdated insulation not meeting current requirements. Therefore, the experts recommended the reconstruction of the crematorium building and technological equipment.

The Olomouc crematorium is one of the most significant functionalist buildings in the city. An architectural competition for the crematorium building was held in 1927. Architect Alois Šajtar won the competition, and based on his design, the building was constructed from 1931 to 1932 at the central cemetery in Neředín, becoming the third crematorium in Moravia and the tenth in the republic. A characteristic element of the building is the monumental ceremonial hall with a large stained glass window, the artistic design of which was contributed to by painter Antonín Strnadel. The building of the Neředín crematorium is a cultural monument.
