Mariánské Lázně – The Karlovy Vary Region wants to save the Peat Pavilion, which was part of the Imperial Spa. The historic building has been deteriorating for several years, mainly due to rising groundwater. According to the regional leadership, it is necessary to find suitable use for the building, which will require an investment of tens of millions of crowns, so that it does not just consume money, said the Governor of the Karlovy Vary Region Petr Kubis (ANO) to journalists today.

Due to the Peat Pavilion, representatives of the region met with the director of the National Heritage Institute Naděžda Goryczková and also spoke with the Minister of Culture Ota Klempíř (for Motorists), who, according to Kubis, promised the region support. The region, which owns the building, is primarily monitoring the groundwater. At the same time, it has commissioned the preparation of a study and project that should propose how to utilize the renovated building in an attractive part of the town. The goal is for the building to not just become another exhibition but to serve as a place for people to meet, to live, said the governor.

The peat preparation building for baths was constructed concurrently with the Imperial Spa between 1893 and 1895. It was connected to the spa building by a corridor below ground level. A unique technology in the atrium of the Imperial Spa then transported the peat to the spa baths. This type of operation is no longer preserved in spas in Western and Central Europe.

In the past, the Karlovy Vary Region had wanted to repair the building several times, both alongside the Imperial Spa, which is a national cultural monument, and separately. There were considerations for the establishment of a cultural center and similar uses. However, no grants have been found so far to help cover the high costs of repairs. Additionally, there has always been a problem with potential operating costs.
