Karlovy Vary - The Karlovy Vary Region has so far been unable to secure funding for the renovation of the peat pavilion located next to the expensively restored Imperial Baths in Karlovy Vary. The pavilion is now shrouded in a tarp printed with the original appearance of the building that once served as the technical support for the Imperial Baths. However, money will continue to be sought, said the Governor of the Karlovy Vary Region, Petr Kulhánek (for STAN), today in a statement to ČTK.

The two-story peat pavilion, from which the healing peat was originally transported to the neighboring spa building, is not under heritage protection, unlike the Imperial Baths. Its renovation would be costly, mainly due to the extensive underground section that would need to be drained. Given the proximity of the Teplá River, this will not be straightforward. Estimates for the reconstruction have hovered around 130 million crowns. An alternative would be to demolish the pavilion and replace it with a replica, which would be cheaper. A third option is to tear down the pavilion and use the space for other purposes, but this is not favored by heritage protectors.

"The peat pavilion was not part of the entire reconstruction of the national cultural monument, the Imperial Baths. It is not part of that structure. We first wanted to draw from the National Recovery Plan, but we ended up below the line in terms of projects. We also explored the possibility of revitalizing brownfields with the support of European funds, but the parameters were written in such a way that the peat pavilion did not meet them. Therefore, we are still looking for a suitable external source, but to ensure that it does not aesthetically disrupt the atmosphere of the reconstructed building, we opted for a temporary beautification of the object with a printed tarp that evokes the original appearance of the pavilion," Kulhánek stated.

The Karlovy Vary Region wanted to finance the peat pavilion from the National Recovery Plan and create a cultural and social center there that would expand the possibilities of the neighboring Imperial Baths.
