We cordially invite you to the presentation of John Summerson's book The Classical Language of Architecture. The book will be introduced by Prof. Jindřich Vybíral.
John Summerson's timeless book looks at architecture as a language and explores its communicative possibilities, presenting classical architecture and its individual components. It illustrates how buildings over the ages exhibited an awareness of a certain stylistic "grammar" and its rules, even as they varied, violated, or even contradicted them.
In the book, the author aims to explain the grammatical functioning of the classical architectural language as simply and clearly as possible. He is less concerned with its origin and development in Greece and Rome, and more with its expansion and use during the Renaissance and the following centuries. He explains the discipline of "orders," the dramatic deviations of Baroque, the subsequent development of Neoclassicism, and in the final chapter, the relationship between classical tradition and modern architecture.
The Czech edition includes an afterword by Jiří Tourek, who places the topic of classical architecture and its expressive apparatus in the Czech context and reflects on how and where Summerson's interpretation might need to be adjusted to better align with the specifics of architecture in Central Europe, which was generally less rigorously classical than in its country of origin, Italy.
