The subject of the competition was the development of an architectural-construction solution for a new bridge over the Lubina River in Příbor at the site of the existing steel bridge, which is no longer suitable from a construction-technical perspective. The design was to define the form and structural solution of the bridge and its connection to existing access roads. The new bridge will be used for pedestrian and cycling traffic. The proposal must respect the economic capabilities of the organizer.

1st place: 90,000 CZK Ing. arch. Marek Blank, Ing. Petr Tej, Ph.D., Ing. Vítězslav Vacek CSc., Ing. Jan Mourek, Janek Srnka Jury evaluation: Design No. 19 is a striking proposal that works with the mass and lapidarity of a single slab of artificial stone laid over the river. In detail and material execution, the design is very refined. The sculptural quality of the artificial stone slab is complemented by a noble stainless steel railing and a lacquered wooden handrail, pleasant to the touch. The materials used are durable, long-lasting, and allow for easy maintenance. Walking across the bridge is not just a crossing over the river; it becomes an event and invites stopping. The generous platform offers space for various social activities connected to the river at this location. Overall, it enhances the connection between the historic town and the open nature, giving it an unmistakable character. The graphical representation of the proposal is at a high level.
2nd place: 70,000 CZK Ing. arch. Tomáš Hradečný, Ing. arch. Kamil Měrka, Ing. arch. Tomáš Kozel, Ing. arch. Petra Holubová, Ing. arch. Et Ing. František Denk, Ph.D., Ing. Ondřej Paulát Jury evaluation: The design features a convincing, clean, and strong artistic concept that consciously works with the context of the given location. Two slender, mutually offset abstracted beams create an impressive composition along with the riverbed and the silhouette of the town. The artistic effect is not in conflict with operational or economic requirements; however, the full side beams pose certain limitations for the intended activities on the bridge. The material and structural aspects of the proposal are well-documented, clear, and feasible.
3rd place: 50,000 CZK Link projekt s.r.o., Ing. Petr Damek, Ing. arch. Michal Palaščák, Ing. Stanislav Brtáň Jury evaluation: The jury appreciates the concept of the bridge as a viewpoint on the town's promontory culminating with the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The bridge is plan-view concave in the direction of the flow and at the top of the arch is closest to the center. The asymmetric box beam asserts itself from a distance as solid and aims to enhance the scenic view. This principle is underscored by the white color of the beam. In contrast, the side closer to the town is equipped only with the barest necessary railing with a lightweight mesh infill. The geometry and construction solution is highly effective. The architecture of the bridge is complex in the range of materials used, technological processes, and form shaping, reaching an exclusive position within the context of the location.
Award with commendation: 6,000 CZK Ing. arch. Vojtěch Sosna, doc. Ing. arch. Zdeněk Rothbauer, Ing. Jan Seifert Jury evaluation: One of the most interesting shape solutions for the bridge in the competition. The creation of a very original unique artifact. Two sculptures "man and woman" conceptually swing at the ends of the bridge - their swing also forms seating. The cladding creates an interesting play of light and shadow. As the only design, it used the existing bridge deck and incorporated it into the overall concept of the bridge. We perceive the justification for economic savings as rather a weakness of the proposal. It raises certain doubts about whether the use of an existing, untested structure might rather increase the implementation costs. This solution is not very suitable for cyclists. Award: 3,500 CZK Ing. Jan Blažek, Ing. arch. Tomáš Hanák, MArq. Jan Šrámek, Akad. arch. Michal Šrámek Jury evaluation: The jury appreciates the original and unconventional approach to the task presented in the proposal. The elegantly shaped concrete beam, reminiscent of the archetype of a bridge, is positively assessed. The proportional balance between the weight of the bridge deck and the slender construction of the railing is also positively perceived. The use of symbols of the gate and tree is considered debatable, as they burden the bridge with meaning. The placement of benches and a tree is regarded as conflicting and dangerous concerning cycling traffic.
Award: 3,500 CZK MDS PROJEKT, s.r.o., Ing. Jan Bursa, Ing. arch. MgA. Marek Přikryl, Ing. arch. Martin Prokš Jury evaluation: A clean, simple solution that refers to the quality of engineering traditions in our country. This bridge can be a prototype for any space that will surely enhance its aesthetic value. The aim of the competition was to select a unique solution for the given space, which this proposal does not fulfill.
Award: 3,500 CZK MgA. Vít Šimek, Ing. arch. Jiří Ksandr, Ing. Martin Fryš, Ing. arch. Tomáš Madro, Ing. arch. Darina Bartková, Ing. arch. Martina Kubešová Jury evaluation: Design No. 21 attracted the jury with its shape and construction simplicity. Elegant Vierendeel beams dimensioned to the height of the railing and a bridge profile of uniform cross-section are the main advantages of the proposal. The shape’s simplicity is emphasized by the uniform surface treatment of the structure - in hot-dip galvanized steel. The authors work with the riverbank as a natural podium and install wooden steps. The detail and construction execution of the bridge diminish the persuasiveness of the design, and similarly, its graphical presentation feels awkward. The jury decided to reward the authors' effort for a simple, inexpensive, and easily maintainable bridge of a technical character.
Award: 3,500 CZK PROJEKTSTUDIO EUCZ, s.r.o., Ing. arch. Ondřej Klimek Jury evaluation: The jury appreciates the clear opinion on the solution of the bridge as a simple wooden structure. The quality of the proposal lies in the cultivated geometry of both the bridge itself and the detail of the supporting railing. The placement on the right bank is underscored by slatted wooden steps. These create a pleasant space for staying in front of the historical center of the town. However, the maintenance of the surface of the wooden bridge deck and the number of horizontal surfaces of the railing are debatable. More information >
