Urban Housing Polička - competition results

Single-phase open architectural design competition

The subject of the competition was the processing of an architectural design for the reconstruction and extension or addition of a children's home in Polička for use as an apartment building. The competition focused on the urban and architectural solution of the site with the existing children's home structure. The goal of the client was to utilize the site for residential purposes while preserving, extending, or reconstructing the existing structure, or possibly even removing it to create a fully functional residential complex of one or more buildings. The demolition of the children's home structure could be considered. Competitors were required to justify this solution appropriately, particularly in regard to the advantages and disadvantages it would bring.

Collaboration: Ing.arch. Tereza Práchenská, Bc. Kryštof Jireš
Jury Evaluation: The clear and understandable urban solution responds to the surrounding development in the northern part of the block it completes. It further proposes a solitary object that addresses the placement of the existing children's home structure and the neighboring family house on A. Lidmilová Street. The proposal brings a cohesive area with a clear architectural expression while preserving the sensitively reconstructed existing children's home structure. The proposal makes good use of the overall extent of the site and provides a qualitatively beneficial solution for public, semi-public, and private spaces, courtyards, and gardens while maximizing the possible capacity of the apartments. The layout of the apartments and shared spaces is satisfactory and offers several imaginative solutions. The material solution inspired by the Masaryk School building in Polička is cultivated. The expression of the new buildings and their proportions adequately match the intended purpose. The jury recommends further development of public spaces (proportions of the gardens and public spaces, development of crossing solutions, and connections). In terms of the economic feasibility of the project, the jury states that the proposal is the most efficient compared to other award-winning proposals. The jury decided to award this proposal the 1st prize.

2nd Place: 180,000 CZK
Authors: Ing.arch. Jiří Papoušek, Ing.arch. Martin Šilhan
Jury Evaluation: The clear and understandable urban solution responds to the surrounding development, makes good use of the overall extent of the site, and brings a qualitatively beneficial solution for the hierarchy of public, semi-public, and private spaces, courtyards, and gardens, with primary placement of parking spaces along the perimeter of the addressed area. The placement of parking along A. Lidmilová Street with a row of trees creates a legitimate setback from the roadway. The universal expression of the architectural solution for the buildings appears formal and would require detailed development. The reconstruction of the children's home in an effort to unify with the new buildings appears schematic and gratuitous. The gallery-type layouts require further development (possibilities for lighting apartments through galleries, windows in gable walls, etc.) to increase the quality of the apartments. The jury decided to award this proposal the 2nd prize. The jury recommended further development of the proposal if it were to participate in the JŘBU.

3rd Place: 120,000 CZK
Authors:
Ing.arch. Jan Doubek, Ing.arch. Soňa Minárechová
Jury Evaluation: An appropriate urban solution based on symmetry in relation to the existing building of the children's home. The architectural solution is sensitive to the scale of the surrounding development due to its chosen two-story size. The volumetric subdivision of the buildings appears too fragmented and requires further development. The connection of the new buildings with the existing structure through two-story "pergolas" appears formal, and strict adherence to symmetry is limiting. The layout offers cultivated living with potential variability in layouts due to a clear modular division. The structural solution offers variants of a wooden structure or another masonry system. The placement of trees in parking spaces would result in a reduction in the number of parking spots. The proposal presents a cohesive area with regard to the reconstruction of the existing children's home building almost in its current form. The jury decided to award this proposal the 3rd prize. The jury recommended significant development of the proposal if it were to participate in the JŘBU.

 Ing.arch. Radek Horyna

Collaboration: Ing.arch. Michal Fousek
Jury Evaluation: A cultivated and appropriate urban solution for three apartment buildings and courtyards clearly and cleanly utilizes the addressed area. The chosen concept of apartment buildings based on a smaller number of apartments does not fully utilize the potential of the location and, as a result, leads to an abundance of public or semi-public outdoor spaces. However, the potential of public spaces remains unused. The declared benefit is not demonstrable. Clean and cultivated architecture and material solutions are present. The significant reconstruction of the children's home in an effort to unify its expression with the new buildings seems too forceful. The layout solution of the outdoor spaces of the apartments in the form of recessed loggias with smaller sizes does not bring the expected quality of living. The jury decided to award this proposal an award.

Award: 20,000 CZK
Author: at DESTYL s.r.o. / Ing.arch. Martin Poledníček, Ing.arch. Jakub Sedlák, Ing.arch. Anna Línková, Bc. Zuzana Butelová, Stanislav Janíček, Ing. Radek Eis
Jury Evaluation: The urban solution of two new apartment buildings conditioned by the demolition of the existing children's home structure does not bring greater efficiency in utilization or adequate improvement in the quality of living and character of the locality. The jury appreciates the cultivated architectural solution and the verification of the option with the demolition of the children's home structure. The jury decided to award this proposal an award.

Award: 10,000 CZK

Author: Ing. arch. Zdeněk Kadlec
Jury Evaluation: The original urban solution is not fully realized in the architectural and layout solutions of the buildings, thus not utilizing its potential. The jury appreciates the graphic representation and the chosen atypical solution of the linear two-story building, which appropriately connects to the surrounding development and responds to the irregularity of the courtyards and gardens with its curved inner facade. The jury decided to award this proposal an award.
