The city of Pardubice announces an architectural competition for the design of the "Zámeček Memorial." The planned project addresses the reconstruction and modernization of the memorial site Zámeček, which is a National Cultural Monument. The competition is announced as a narrowed, anonymous, one-round contest, with the deadline for submissions being June 6. The author of the winning design is expected to be known by the end of September and should subsequently prepare the project documentation.

The authors of the conceptual design of the memorial are historians Blanka Jedličková and Vojtěch Kyncl. Their goal is not only to illustrate the path of the Nazis to the destruction of people but also to depict the journey of Czechoslovak society in coming to terms with the consequences of war. The memorial is not intended to be a place that describes the lives of the victims of Nazi tyranny but should serve to understand the roots of Nazi ideology as well as racial and national hatred. The exhibition should creatively engage visitors in realizing that our country has already experienced firsthand where tolerance of hateful thoughts and expressions directed at groups of residents can lead, and it does not wish to repeat this experience.

"For the Zámeček Memorial to fulfill its role as the memory of our nation well and with dignity, its reconstruction and modernization are necessary. Thanks to the conceptual project approved by the City Council of Pardubice, the Memorial will become a place of respect, humility, awareness of our own history, and national pride. A place where we will understand the complexities of today's times, where we will learn and discover," said the mayor of Pardubice, Martin Charvát.

The architectural competition was announced on May 15, and the deadline for submitting applications is June 6. Based on the submitted portfolios, the jury will narrow the pool of competitors to a maximum of 8 applicants. Twenty days later, a workshop will take place at the Zámeček Memorial for the competitors, during which they will receive detailed information about the planned project. They must submit their designs by September 7. The winner will be decided by a jury led by Marcela Steinbachová, whose work was awarded the title of Architect of the Year 2016 by experts. The five-member jury consists of three independent members and two dependent members.

"The territory of the Zámeček Memorial is very specific and sensitive, which is why an architectural design competition was chosen to select the most suitable solution. As part of the competition, we require solutions for the area in two independent phases. The first phase will address the land of the National Cultural Monument with a new exhibition and entrance space of the memorial. The second phase will include the area of the adjacent forest park, which should function as a recreational space," stated Deputy Mayor Jakub Rychtecký, who is overseeing the project, adding that one of the outcomes of the architectural competition is also the territorial connection between the Zámeček Memorial and the Larisch Villa, owned by the Czechoslovak Legionary Association. "The study should identify the ideal connection between Larish Villa and the Zámeček Memorial and offer its architectural solution, which will be a dignified link between both memorial sites. It will also include a proposal for an ideological solution to commemorate the last journey of the victims from Larish Villa to the execution site, which should spiritually connect both places," explained Deputy Mayor Jakub Rychtecký.

The reconstructed and modernized memorial is expected to open in the spring of 2020, exactly 75 years after the end of World War II. The city plans to finance the project and engineering work and the preparation of exhibitions from its own budget, while it aims to draw funds from European Union sources for the reconstruction itself and the establishment of the exhibition. The reconstruction and modernization of the Zámeček Memorial is estimated to cost about 15 million crowns according to preliminary estimates.
