Prague - The Prague 3 municipal office will announce an art competition for the design solution of the pedestrian tunnel exit between Karlín and Žižkov, located at Tachovské Square. This stems from a document approved by the city's district council. The square is currently waiting for a reconstruction lasting about a year at a cost of 61.3 million crowns excluding VAT.

During the reconstruction, the retaining walls, into which the tunnel exits on the Žižkov side, will be raised. This will create more space for the artwork. "The space deserves a quality and cultivated artistic solution, which can contribute to establishing a relationship between the residents and the place and thus prevent vandalism of the otherwise relatively exposed smooth walls," states the approved document.

According to the municipal office's requirements, the proposals should enhance the experience of emerging from the tunnel into daylight or vice versa. It may evoke local history or typical elements of Žižkov. The costs for implementing the proposal should not exceed 3.5 million crowns excluding VAT, according to the document. The municipality aims to obtain the funds through the Art for the City program, which is supported by the Prague magistrate for placing artistic installations in public spaces.

The rectangular Tachovské Square is located at the intersection of Koněvova and Husitská streets. Currently, it is unattractive and has an unused building of former public restrooms. After the reconstruction, the building will be removed, seating will be added in the center of the square under six new mature trees, and living areas will be created along the houses with the potential for installing restaurant gardens. Access to the bike path will be barrier-free, and the lawn will extend all the way to the vineyard at the foot of Vítkov.

Prague 3 is also planning modifications to other squares. Soon, the long-prepared transformation of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, which the Žižkov municipal office plans to implement, should begin. The magistrate is also planning improvements to Vítkov Hill. This year, according to previous statements by Prague 3 mayor Jiří Ptáček (TOP 09), modifications to the upper part of Žižkov Square should also begin. The municipal office has also selected a study for the transformation of Jiřího z Lobkovic Square in the competition, based on which it will prepare a project for the modifications. In recent years, the municipality has already repaired, for example, Komenského and Kostnické Squares.
