Prague – The Central Bohemian Region will announce an architectural competition for the design of a new four-year high school in Jesenice, located in the district of Prague-West. The new building is intended for a maximum of 360 students in three parallel classes. It will also include a dining hall, a gymnasium, and outdoor sports facilities. The decision to announce the competition was made today by the regional councilors, as reported by the spokesperson of the regional office, Zuzana Žídková. The capacity of high schools in the Prague-West district has been insufficient for a long time.

The land for the construction of the Jesenice high school is located in the wider city center and is adjacent to Říčanská Street. The architectural competition aims to provide a solution that combines functionality, sustainability, and a pleasant environment for students and teachers.

"We also place emphasis on the sensitive integration of the building into the urban context of Jesenice, and we certainly want the sports area to be open to the public," stated the regional councilor for education, Milan Vácha (STAN). According to him, the region has had success with open architectural competitions in the case of the new high school building in Černošice, which received nearly 40 proposals.

The investor for the construction of the Jesenice high school is the region, and the city is to transfer the land to it free of charge based on a memorandum from 2024. Jesenice and its surroundings are among the fastest-growing areas in the region, which is significantly reflected in the education sector. The regional office is therefore striving to increase school capacities. It has built a loft extension in the Hostivice high school and is preparing to construct two new high schools in Černošice and Jesenice.

This year, the number of applicants for secondary schools in the Central Bohemian Region has slightly increased. In the first round of entrance exams, 21,599 applicants submitted applications to 149 schools in the region, compared to 21,475 last year. This year, there are 43,958 applications submitted, while last year there were 43,241. The capacity of four-year high schools will be 1,677 places in the next school year, up from the current 1,662. This year, there were 4,489 applications for four-year high schools from 3,247 applicants, compared to 4,334 from 3,166 applicants last year.
