In May 1921, the president of the republic decided to set up a memorial plaque for the Czechs and Slovaks who fell during World War I at Prague Castle; however, architect Josip Plečnik presented Masaryk with a different way to honor their memory—a monolithic granite column—the Column of Freedom.
The extraction of the granite monolith did not take place until 1925; it measured 19m after it was broken off, but while lifting it, the upper 3.33m section broke off.
Josip Plečnik hated waste and stored leftover pieces from his constructions in his garden, so we assume that he also stored this piece of granite here, which is a crucial part of our proposal.
We are erecting this fragment in his garden, into which we have designed a hole that precisely meets Sivka's needs.
The shelter is conservative, refined, monumental, yet not vain.
