In the second round of the competition in the square in H. Králové, the city has five proposals

Hradec Králové - All five candidates who succeeded in the first round submitted proposals for the second round of the architectural-urban planning competition for a new square and residential building in the Kukleny district of Hradec Králové. The jury is set to discuss them on Thursday, and the city council is expected to review the selection on May 12. This was stated by the spokeswoman of the town hall, Kateřina Rohlíčková. The square, located on the site of the former Kukleny tannery, is to become the center of the developing district on the western edge of the city.

The town hall received 49 proposals for the first round of the competition. The jury anonymously selected five finalists for the second round, in which the architects were to refine their proposals. The original deadline for submitting proposals for the second round was April 10, but the town hall postponed it to April 30 due to a reduction in the intended number of apartments in the residential building from 100 to 90.

In addition to the New Kukleny square, architects were to design a residential block of cooperative housing that the city is planning. The residential building would be located near Prague Street and the new square. According to the town hall, the cooperative apartments should primarily be available to young families with children. The town hall believes that cooperative apartments should be up to 30 percent cheaper than those offered by developers.

The Kukleny brownfield, covering nearly 14 hectares, is considered by the town hall to have exceptional potential for creating a new center for the district, which could provide homes for nearly 1,900 people. The architectural competition concerns an area of over half a hectare. More than half of this area is to be occupied by the residential building, with the remainder designated for the square.

The dilapidated building of the former tannery in Kukleny from the 19th century was demolished by the city in 2023. The only remnant of the extensive factory complex built from raw brick is the chimney. In 2014, the city had the characteristic clock tower removed from the factory hall, and it is stored in a warehouse at the airport. Architects were allowed to incorporate the tower and the brickwork from the demolished buildings into their proposals.
