The new exhibition project of the Museum of the City of Brno, held on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the birth of architect Bohuslav Fuchs, is dedicated to the phenomenon of interwar architecture and modern photography, in connection with two – now world-famous – personalities: Bohuslav Fuchs (1895–1972) and Rudolf Sandal (1899–1980). Architect, urban planner, architectural theorist, educator, and artist Bohuslav Fuchs was a leading figure of Czechoslovak functionalism and one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, not only in the Czech lands but also in Europe. The fame of his buildings both at home and abroad was enhanced by the brilliant photographs of Rudolf Sandal, published in a number of academic and leisure magazines and publications. Sandal (whose death marks 45 years this year) was a prominent representative of “new photography” with his exceptional artistic approach and technical execution, focusing mainly on architectural photography and thereby popularizing the Czechoslovak interwar avant-garde. In Brno, he was one of the "court" photographers of Bohuslav Fuchs. Their mutual cooperation is the main theme of the intervention against the backdrop of the permanent exhibition O nové Brno, which places Fuchs's buildings in a Central European context. Alongside original photographs of Fuchs's architectural works by Rudolf Sandal, reproductions from the photographic album created by Bohuslav Fuchs himself are also presented. A showcase of residential accessories (ceramics, glass, textiles) from the production of the company Magazin Aka – a family business founded by Fuchs in 1932 – is exhibited, and sequences from documentary films related to his life and work are projected. An exclusive display also features a period "guestbook" with commemorative entries from significant guests who stayed in the architect's own family cottage called Nový svět, which inspired the naming of the exhibition and publication project. The attractive visual design of the exhibition intervention is the work of the graphic studio Pixle.
Part of the opening will be a public presentation of the pneumatic sculpture by Bohuslav Fuchs entitled Slávy Fuchs.
