Wooden Construction Salon '22 shifted the perception of wooden architecture
The end of March belonged to the seventeenth edition of the festival and selection showcase of contemporary wooden architecture – the Salon of Timber Constructions, which primarily aims to promote wood and the associated modern technologies as a leading solution for the sustainability of the construction industry – both to professionals and the general public.
The event was inaugurated on Thursday, March 24, with a lecture by architect and manager of the progressive Scandinavian studio White Arkitekter – Carl Bäckstrand at CAMP, who spoke primarily about the significant role architects and builders play regarding climate change, sustainability, and ecology. The studio White Arkitekter is, among other commitments, dedicated to realizing only carbon-neutral constructions by 2030. They strive to inspire other professionals in construction, as well as investors worldwide, through their example.
On Friday, the Salon of Timber Constructions opened its main space – for the first time this year in Hall 13 of the Prague market in Holešovice, which was enlivened by wood in several forms. From the reception made of massive logs, one had to walk through a coniferous grove, which led to the heart of the exhibition, showcasing a selection of 25 leading wooden realizations from Czech and Slovak studios and 4 progressive foreign projects. The exhibition could be viewed with coffee in hand from the wooden bar in the middle and one could also rest on one of the "sailboats" that partitioned and enriched the space of the hall.
Information directly "from the source" could be obtained by all interested in timber constructions at the exhibitor tables and also from the podium, which on Friday featured, among others, Philipp Zumbrunnen from the British design and implementation office EURBAN, who spoke about the use of progressive wooden structural systems in construction and the significance of building with wood in London and cities in general. The renowned Italian architect Peter Pichler subsequently presented extravagant yet environmentally sensitive projects from the Milan studio he leads. Andreas Breuss, an Austrian architect and educator, spoke about a very interesting material realization: the reconstruction of a house in Retzbach using clay plasters.
On Friday afternoon, the podium hosted a discussion on the future of wood as a building material, and the lecture day concluded with a networking meeting combined with the launch of this year's Wooden Architecture Yearbook '22, which is a printed supplement to the festival and simultaneously an independent publication presenting a curatorial selection of the most significant timber constructions of recent times. The yearbook also features interesting interviews with leading figures from the domestic architectural scene and this year exceptionally with architects from the Swedish studio White Arkitekter.
Saturday continued in a similarly packed spirit – the morning was dedicated to lectures in the field of materials: Karel Goláň (studio crea-tura) spoke about circular architecture, Jiří Oslizl gave a lecture on spatial acoustics and the connection of design and function of wooden panels, Miroslav Drobník presented new technical and architectural possibilities that clay panels bring to timber constructions, and Miloš Pánek from the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at ČZU spoke about surface treatments of facades. The afternoon was devoted to presentations from individual studios whose realizations are part of this year's Wooden Architecture Yearbook '22.
