New York - Four waterfalls began to spout water on the East River near Manhattan in New York on Thursday as part of an art project that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the "most unexpected" waterfalls between North America and Africa.

Danish artist Olafur Eliasson took two years to create the freely placed waterfalls. The project, which cost $15.5 million, is expected to generate over $55 million in economic activity.
"It was hard work. It took effort," Eliasson recounted about the many nights spent testing water pumps through metal structures.
The waterfalls are New York's largest public art project since 2005, when artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude created a piece in Central Park called The Gates - embellishing 37 kilometers of pathways with 7,500 saffron-colored panels. This project attracted over five million visitors and generated about $254 million.
Travel agencies are now offering boat and bicycle tours to the artificially created waterfalls, which Bloomberg described as a "beautiful symbol of the return of energy to our waterfront."
The waterfalls will be on display every day from 7 AM to 10 PM until mid-October. They will be illuminated after sunset.
