More than two years ago, the Rotterdam office of Erick van Egeraata won a competition for a new waste incineration plant in Roskilde. However, only now has a contract been signed with the future operator Kara/Noveren for a project that resembles a sacred building more than an industrial hall. “The lower part of the building is shaped to reflect the roofs of the factory building and culminates at the end in a hundred-meter tower that refers to the cathedral in Roskilde.” The colorful solution for the outer shell made of two layers of aluminum will resemble the aforementioned temple with a facade of fired bricks. Behind the perforated facade of the incineration plant lies state-of-the-art technology. Round holes cut into the double facade using lasers should glow at night, resembling glowing iron. Another feature is the visual effect reminiscent of flames “igniting” the entire incineration plant every hour. Upon completion of the incineration plant in 2013, it should provide energy for 60,000 households.
