The popular workshop is opening for the fourth time to young aspiring architects and designers. A joint project will take place in a new location - Piešťany's Lido.
The Lido Island, located on the Piešťany section of the Váh River, will be the new venue for Workshop 1:1, intended for students of architecture, design, and related fields. From July 18 - 29, 2016, participants, under the guidance of experienced foreign instructors, will work on unusual objects created "custom-made" for the environment. The results of their ten-day efforts will be presented to the public during the Lidožúr festival on July 29, 2016.
The main goal of Workshop 1:1 is to break students out of the stereotypical work on studio assignments and offer them a different format of learning through practice, by directly participating in the creation of a real project at a one-to-one scale. Students from domestic and foreign schools, under the leadership of instructors Tobias Foged Permina (Denmark) and Ransu Helenius (Finland), will work on unusual and artistically valuable works, open to a wide range of uses and interpretations by visitors to Lido Island. The workshop will include public lectures and presentations from instructors, invited critics, and workshop participants at the Žiwell community center.
The workshop participants will experience an intensified process of designing and subsequent construction of the object. They will acquire new skills related to construction activities, teamwork, as well as specific design methods influenced by the leaders of individual teams. The learning process here occurs through equal collaboration and direct application of theoretical knowledge into practical experience.
For Piešťany, Workshop 1:1 will be an opportunity to consider the development of the Váh Island area, which stretches from the city center far to the north, creating excellent conditions for connecting places along the Váh River. The event aims to be a positive example of gradual changes, whose next step is the synchronization of all location-related actors, grounded in a professionally developed vision and contemplation of Lido as an urban space, not just a water management project. The workshop aims to build on the activities of civic associations that care for the Lido area in an effort to transform the features of this unique area into a stimulating space that could serve as a new recreational zone for the city.
The workshop is also an elective subject at the Academy of Fine Arts. Due to the credit system, students from other universities can also earn 2 credits for completing the workshop. The guarantor of the subject is Assoc. Prof. Sabah Shawkat, Engineering Department, KAT, VŠVU.
The participation fee for the workshop is 200 euros and includes meals, accommodation, and a professional program for 12 days. Travel costs for participants are not covered. Further questions and applications can be sent to the email: [email protected]
The 4th edition of Workshop 1:1 is organized by the association WOVEN in collaboration with the association Center for Architecture.
The project is financially supported by the Tatrabanka Foundation and the Trnava Self-Governing Region. The project is further supported by: Žiwell Community Center, House of Art Piešťany.
The association WOVEN was founded in 2014 by transforming an informal group of four female architects from the Department of Architectural Creation at VŠVU. From the beginning, they have aimed not only to create but primarily to educate young architects and designers. They have succeeded in this, thanks in part to Workshop 1:1, which has been successfully operating since 2013.
The association Center for Architecture strives to raise public awareness of architecture, urbanism, and design. During its operation, it has organized several exhibitions (Piešťany Sneak Peek, Hot Modern, both at the Piešťany Power Station), a conference (Visions for Piešťany), and a series of guided tours called ArchitekTÚRA.
