Jaroměř (Náchodsko) - The new steel bridge over the Elbe in Jaroměř in the Náchod region is now open to the public. The original bridge for pedestrians and cyclists was damaged by the flood two years ago and had to be demolished. The official opening of the new bridge will take place on March 21, Jaroměř Mayor Jiří Klepsa said today. "Some minor park adjustments still need to be completed. As for the bridge itself, it has been fully operational since February 13, and people are using it again," Klepsa said. According to him, the construction of the bridge cost approximately 27 million crowns, with 19 million obtained from a grant from the Ministry of Transport, and an additional 2.9 million crowns promised to the city from the solidarity fund. The swollen Elbe at the beginning of June two years ago split the pillar of the original bridge in the middle of the river, and an iron footbridge also collapsed from the bridge. The bridge, which primarily connected Na Ostrově School and the main square, was built in 1884, with a side footbridge added in 1931. After the flood and the removal of the original bridge, the city hall considered constructing a temporary bridge, but later abandoned the plan due to the high cost of temporary bridging. The architectural competition was won by the design of architect Mirko Bauma, with contributions from David Baroš and Vladimír Janata.
