Brno - The middle pool of the Brno swimming pool Riviéra is set to receive a stainless steel basin next year for 40 to 50 million crowns, if the city approves the investment. In recent years, the problem of water leakage from the concrete pools has intensified, and this year 200 cubic meters are already leaking daily. If the pool is not repaired, it would have to be closed next year, said the chairman of the board of the city company Starez, Antonín Crha (KDU-ČSL), at a press conference today.

The emergency state thus increases the operating costs of the pool by 800,000 crowns during the season, as it can only be filled with tap water due to drought and low flow in the parallel intake. "With the utmost effort and the commitment of the staff, we will complete this season. Divers have applied protective mixtures underwater to the worst spots," said the facility's director Martin Mikš. An alternative solution is to paint the pools with a special insulation layer, which would cost about five million. "However, this is a short-term solution, at most for two years," Crha stated. The last reconstruction of the pools was done 12 years ago, and since they are made of coarse concrete, they quickly succumb to weather influences and aggressive chlorinated water.
A similar stainless steel basin is available at the pool on Kraví hora. "The advantage lies in its long-term durability and minimal maintenance needs. It is also much easier to clean, and algae do not accumulate there as much," Crha said. Another problem is the very leakage of water. "It is chlorinated water, and we practically do not know where it is disappearing, although the sands under Riviéra do purify it," Crha noted.
The project will be prepared by Starez, and it depends only on the city's approach. The repair should be completed before the start of the season. In subsequent years, two more pools would need to be repaired, with total estimated investment of 150 to 190 million crowns.
The swimming pool at Riviéra, whose history dates back to the 19th century, is one of the largest natural swimming areas not only in Brno but also in the entire country. The pools are about 400 meters long, and the daily capacity is 7,000 people. This year, during the tropical heat, it is experiencing record attendance. In July, over 38,000 people visited, while last year it was 26,500.
