Brno - The Brno City Hall is preparing the construction of a traffic playground and the renovation of the small castle in the Riviéra recreational area, totaling 95 million crowns. The area will thus serve for recreation as well as education, said Pavel Žára, spokesperson for the municipality, to ČTK today. In the Riviéra area, there is currently a swimming pool, playground, and fitness center. Construction is expected to start probably in 2013, with the city set to receive 79 million crowns from European funds.

The traffic playground will be partially covered, allowing it to be used year-round. The area will see an increase in greenery, and funds will also go towards renovating the so-called small castle, which has been unused and deteriorating for years. "The goal of the reconstruction will be to restore both the exterior appearance and the interior layout to its original form. The building will serve as a base for theoretical educational programs, and a multipurpose hall will also be available. The Brno City Police prevention department will operate in the small castle," Žára stated.
The traffic playground will create a network of cycling paths that will simulate various traffic situations, such as signalized and non-signalized intersections or railway crossings. A bidirectional track will be added for inline skating enthusiasts. The area will serve the public, as well as schools and other organizations.
The history of the Riviéra area began in the 19th century when a classicist spa building was constructed here. Since then, the area has changed owners several times and now serves as a natural swimming pool. A cascade of three pools was excavated in the former riverbed, and this paid pool area is adjacent to a relaxation zone that is freely accessible to the public.
