Beroun - Beroun will build a new steel footbridge over the Litavka River near the business academy. It will replace the pedestrian crossing, which is in poor condition. The costs are estimated at four million crowns. Construction is set to begin in the summer. This was announced by Mayor Šárka Endrlová. The city chose from three options - concrete, wooden, and steel. Ultimately, the most advantageous proposal was selected: a two-and-a-half-meter-wide steel footbridge with a single arch. Its surface will be made of wood and plastic. "The concrete footbridge is financially demanding to maintain and there is a risk of damage from graffiti artists. The wooden footbridge, on the other hand, had the highest acquisition cost," explained Martina Holotínová, head of the investment and property department. In addition to the Litavka, the more well-known Berounka River also crosses the city, so residents have to cross at several points. The devastating floods in 2002 essentially destroyed all the footbridges in the city, so new ones had to be built. Some have lifting mechanisms to prevent damage from future centennial floods. According to the mayor, footbridges in the city are among the key issues. The new construction is also related to the planned relocation of the bus station closer to the train station, as it will be used by many passengers. "We decided to build an entirely new footbridge. The reconstruction of the existing one, which is in very poor condition, would be only slightly cheaper than building a new one, which will consequently have a much longer lifespan," added Endrlová. The city already had the footbridges near the winter stadium and in the V Kozle area repaired last year. One of the newest footbridges in Beroun is located in Na Ptáku. It was built two years ago during the construction of the bike path Following the Tracks of Czech Kings. It measures around 150 meters and its construction cost approximately 20 million crowns.
