Brno - The Brno City Hall will offer the former prison on Bratislavská Street to emerging artists and representatives of creative professions. The building is expected to evolve into a business incubator for the creative industry, where budding creators will obtain an office to launch their business. It should also provide them with exhibition space. The city hall aims to secure European funding for the startup and operation of the incubator, said Mayor Roman Onderka (CSSD) to reporters today. The costs of setting up the center are unknown; they are to be estimated by a processed study.
In the Creative Center Brno, as the authors of the proposal have named it, according to the mayor, young architects, designers, and fashion designers could be involved, for example. It should also offer space for the presentation of photographs, paintings, sculptures, music, and dance. Various workshops for the public, festivals, and educational programs should also take place inside.
The former prison, where soldiers were previously sent for short-term sentences, is, according to Onderka, well-suited for this purpose. It offers plenty of space - the built-up area and courtyard cover over 7000 square meters. The courtyard also provides the opportunity to partially move creative activities outdoors.
The building is located in a socially excluded area. The project aims to support the city hall's efforts to revitalize, make more attractive, and transform the neglected part of Brno into an appealing part of the broader city center.
The city hall aims to secure European funding for the establishment of the center and the initial years of operation. According to city hall spokesman Pavel Žáry, it could cover up to 70 percent of the costs.
According to the mayor, similar centers operate abroad, for example, in the Netherlands and Britain. Therefore, the city hall is looking for a partner from those centers who could assist in the creation of the Brno one. Onderka expects that Brno universities, especially their arts-oriented faculties, will also get involved.
