Brno - The interiors of the listed Sokol Stadium on Kounicova Street in Brno are receiving a more modern look. A Children’s Center is being created there for 40 million crowns, which will provide better conditions for the physical training of children aged two to twelve. Over the summer, the visitor facilities will also be improved, with a reconstruction of 9.3 million crowns particularly focused on the entrance hall of the complex and the entrance to the assembly hall. Michal Doležel, vice-chairman of Sokol Brno I, told ČTK today.

Sokol plans to open the newly reconstructed spaces in October, including a range of sports and social activities, such as video mapping on the building. Sokol has obtained funding for the Children’s Center from the city, the region, the Ministry of Education, and the city district of Brno-Center, and has also released its own funds. The city and the region's contribution will enable the reconstruction of the hall.

Sokol Stadium is one of the largest sports facilities in the region. The complex was developed gradually according to the designs of Jindřich Kumpošt and Miloš Lamla. From the outdoor training area established in 1922, a multifunctional building for sports, gymnastics, social, and cultural purposes was added between 1927 and 1929.

The assembly hall of the Stadium became for a long time the largest cultural center in the city, dominated by organs from the Prague Rudolfinum. In the past, the philharmonic orchestra performed there, and it is returning now due to the renovation of the Janáček Theatre.

Sokol Brno I currently has 2000 members in eight sports sections. Approximately 10,000 people visit the entire complex weekly, including Sokol members, high school and university students, as well as players from SK Volleyball Brno.

“After the reconstructed spaces of the Children’s Center and the entrance hall, we have left to modernize the main facilities for our sports representatives, namely the gymnastics gym and the sports hall, as well as the assembly hall. These central spaces of the Stadium have long been in very poor condition,” Doležel stated.
