Brno – The Brno city council has approved an exception to the greenery protection regulation to allow the reconstruction of Moravské náměstí according to the winning architectural design. The exception, which the council approved at the request of the Brno-střed district, still needs to be approved by the representatives, Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík stated in a press release today. The reconstruction is expected to start next year, and the local park is set to be significantly more inviting than it is today, with a café included. According to previous information from the mayor of the Brno-střed district, Vojtěch Mencl (ODS), the transformation is expected to cost 50 million crowns.
The winner of the architectural competition, the company consequence forma, was selected by the district at the end of 2016, and there were initial plans to start construction as early as 2018.
The current shape of the park, featuring a central fountain, is from the 1970s. Paths, benches, and the fountain are to be adjusted, and a café with public restrooms is to be created, which will partially shield the park from the busy Koliště street. The view from the café is intended to overlook the park and towards Rašínova street.
The reconstruction of the square and the construction of the building respect the existing values of the site, especially the mature trees that are of great significance to the park. The roof of the café is integrated into the park in such a way that trees can pass through circular openings in two places, creating a location with a strong atmosphere and seating under the trees.
