Brno - Brno will negotiate the state's financial participation in the construction of a multifunctional hall and cycling track. The hall for the hockey team Kometa is expected to cost 1.5 billion crowns. It is to be built at the exhibition grounds in the location of the velodrome, which is already in poor condition, and therefore the city will construct a new one for 600 million in Komárov. Brno's Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) told reporters that the city would like to obtain one-third of the funds for the velodrome from the state, and will negotiate the amount for the hall with the state. The resigning Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said during his visit to the region that investment is necessary. According to him, European funds should be utilized, and the second source is the state budget.
Vokřál presented both projects to the resigning government today, which is on a two-day visit to the region. First, it is necessary to build the velodrome so that a hall can be constructed on the site of the old one. "As for the velodrome, we are talking about preparing a nationwide program where the state would co-finance one-third and the regions would finance the remaining two-thirds. That is our idea," Vokřál stated.
Regarding the multifunctional hall, he did not specify how much Brno would seek from the state. "There will be a separate negotiation about that. We need to find a way to finance not only the investment but also the operational costs," Vokřál added. He wants to build a hall for Kometa because this topic has been discussed for a long time, but also because the club won the extraleague title last year after 51 years and defended it this year.
In Brno, there has long been talk of bringing hockey and football back to the area behind Lužánkami, where they used to be. Currently, a dilapidated football stadium stands there, where Zbrojovka last won a title. However, the constructions on the city's land are hindered by the properties of entrepreneur Libor Procházka, with whom the city has long been unsuccessfully seeking an agreement. Vokřál admitted that this has not been successful and therefore it is necessary to look for another option.
Babiš agrees with this. "When Procházka is blackmailing the city and negotiations lead to nothing, it is better to make such a decision and do it here," Babiš said at the exhibition grounds. According to him, the state's share in investments will be discussed. "There must be money for it because we need to invest. We primarily want to invest from European funds. For the upcoming programming period from 2021 onwards, we want to negotiate to have a decisive influence on it ourselves, rather than having a bureaucrat in Brussels decide, leading us to miss out on those funds. The second source of funding is the state's revenues; the budget is in surplus," Babiš stated.
