Brno - The historically protected building of the train station in the historic center of Brno is set for a major transformation in the coming years. The company Brno new station development, which won the Živá nádraží tender, has committed to investing at least 130 million Czech crowns in the reconstruction of the building. Czech Railways will lease the site for 40 years, and the surrounding streets and the so-called Small America will also undergo revitalization. Both the region and the transport provider are still considering the possibility that regional trains would continue to operate in the center of Brno via an overhead rapid transit line. "We will first renovate the facade and the interior spaces of the station building, which will still see passengers for at least another six years. In the final phase, the building will become a pleasant social and commercial zone. After the relocation of rail transport, we want to continue in the neighboring areas. The work should take about two years, and we estimate a total investment of around two billion crowns," said Radek Konečný, the company's director, to ČTK today, welcoming the idea of the rapid transit line. The new zone would greatly benefit if some railway transport were maintained, allowing thousands of people from the region to flow daily into the newly emerging center. The overall concept of transforming the station area envisions the creation of a promenade zone with greenery in the middle. "This should close an imaginary loop that was previously planned as a metropolitan promenade with numerous exhibition buildings. The renovated station building could then be placed alongside the buildings of the old theatre or Janáček Opera in the middle of parks. Similar buildings, but certainly not in a romantic style, but in a modern style, could stand throughout this entire loop," said architect Petr Hruša to ČTK today. The investor expects that after the change of the zoning plan, commercial spaces, large-capacity underground garages, and parking spaces will also appear in the new southern center of the city. In the area of the former market, known as Small America, Konečný also anticipates residential construction.
