Brno - The reconstruction of the main train station in Brno continues with a two-month delay. The third phase, the renovation of the left wing of the station building, was slowed down by the coronavirus pandemic. The work will cost approximately 140 million crowns excluding tax. The station will be completely repaired no sooner than at the end of 2021, said Czech Railways spokesperson Vanda Rajnochová today.

In the left part of the station, workers are currently demolishing. The largest part of the demolition work will last until the end of October. "After that, new structures will be built, networks will be distributed, technological equipment will be installed, and surface adjustments will be made. This part will mostly contain commercial spaces, such as grocery stores, printing services, fast food, and similar," Rajnochová explained. This phase is expected to finish in the autumn of next year.

In the fourth and final phase, builders will move to the right wing of the building. "In this part, we will revitalize the arrival hall, the connecting corridor of both halls, the facade of the station building facing the tram stops, and the commercial spaces," Rajnochová added.

If construction work is not affected by the coronavirus, Czech Railways aims to complete the fourth phase by the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter of next year. However, a building permit is still pending for the fourth phase, and obtaining it may be influenced by a property rights dispute from the 1990s.

The main train station building in Brno underwent a major renovation last year. The communication and signaling systems were modernized, and the departure hall was reconstructed. A train service suspension that began in December two years ago lasted for a year.
