Brno - The old dormitory for high school students in Brno-Kohoutovice is planned to be converted by the Brno city council into special housing for seniors. Older people would live in the building in something like private rooms - each resident would have their own room and bathroom, while sharing a kitchen and living area with a few others. Such senior housing operates in Vienna. It would be the first such construction in Brno, said the mayor's deputy Daniel Rychnovský (KDU-ČSL) to reporters today.
According to Rychnovský, this type of senior housing offers several advantages. People do not live alone, but at the same time, they have privacy whenever they desire it. On the ground floor of the building, according to the deputy, a care service could also operate, where people could order visits from caregivers, delivery of lunches, or shopping. The service would also serve the entire surrounding housing estate.
The renovation of the Juventus youth home on Stamicova street will cost 45 million crowns. Inside, 87 small apartments or specifically senior residential units should be created. The layout is yet to be planned by the designers.
According to Rychnovský, the dormitory for high school students is now redundant in Brno. "In the last ten years, there has been a significant decrease in demand for accommodation, the building is half-empty, and it is unnecessary for us as a city. At the same time, we know that there is a great need for social housing,” he stated.
Part of the building could, according to him, be used for social housing, for example for mothers with children who usually have to leave a shelter after a year of stay. The future layout of the building will be planned by the city council along with the local district of Kohoutovice. According to the mayor's deputy Oliver Pospíšil (ČSSD), the local council may prefer the senior use of the building.
