Brno - A private investor today opened underground garages with 400 parking spaces near the Janáček Theater in Brno. They are intended to address parking problems in the city center. Parking will cost 20 crowns per hour during the day this year, increasing to 30 crowns next year. The prices are comparable to the nearby Rozmarýn parking garage, where parking costs 30 crowns for one hour and 45 crowns for an hour and a half, with space for 380 vehicles. The investment in the garages by the theater amounted to 300 million crowns, making it the largest investment for the company Tymet to date. According to the company's chairman Lukáš Wimětal, the return on investment is at least 15 years. "This is a long-term investment. We will see how citizens utilize the garages," Wimětal said. He noted that the project's advantage is quick access to the center. He also mentioned a larger parking area compared to competing projects. The new garages were built under the square in front of the Janáček Theater and are two stories high. They currently have two charging stations for electric vehicles, which are expected to increase in the future. The construction was completed in 11 months. The city, which welcomes the investment, plans to connect the parking lot to the Janáček Theater via an underground corridor. However, the seven-million-crown investment is not yet complete. Builders are expected to finish the connection by February of next year. "Above the garages, there will be a relaxation zone with greenery and benches, and then the space will be complete. We will undertake this step in the spring of next year," said Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) to reporters. The oldest parking garage in the center of Brno is the Rozmarýn building, operated by Imos facility. The city is constructing a new parking garage on Kopečná Street near the center, offering motorists 88 parking spaces. The parking garage will cost more than 60 million crowns, with Brněnské komunikace as the investor. Next spring, construction of a parking garage on Panenská Street may begin. Preparations are also ongoing for another garage under Veselá and Besední Streets. Directly above it, the Janáček Cultural Center with a concert hall for the Brno Philharmonic may be built. However, the city currently lacks the funds for its construction. The projects are managed by the municipal company Brněnské komunikace.
