Brno - The Brno city hall has so far unsuccessfully sought an investor to build a parking garage under the park near the Janáček Theater. No one applied for the bidding process that was announced last year. It has therefore canceled it and is now preparing a new way to find an investor. The mayor's deputy Oliver Pospíšil (ČSSD) told ČTK today. He sees the influence of the crisis as the reason for the failure.
"It's mainly due to the crisis, because before it broke out, there were many interested parties who offered to carry out such a project," Pospíšil noted. The cost of the underground garages is estimated at 490 million crowns. Inside, 400 vehicles will be able to park.
According to the deputy, the city will most likely have to address the construction and operation of the garages simultaneously with the adjustment of parking in the surrounding area. However, he stated that offering the investor land for the construction of garages while simultaneously managing parking spaces perhaps in a two-kilometer radius is not the way forward. "We will search for partnership cooperation (with the investor) with Brněnské komunikace, which manages parking. It will most likely involve a connection, including ownership," said Pospíšil. Brněnské komunikace is a city-owned company.
One parking garage is expected to start being built in the city this year, specifically on Panenská Street next to the New City Hall. The investor is Brno Parking, partially owned by the city. According to Pospíšil, however, the parking garage next to the New City Hall has a more advantageous budget. A significant portion of it is planned to be above ground, which will be cheaper than a completely underground construction. Furthermore, at the Janáček Theater, where such a structure is considered, the construction also includes the adjustment of the park, including a water feature. The cost of the construction is also increased by the adjustment of the intersection, which is necessary for the entrance to the parking garage.
The parking garage at the Janáček Theater was supposed to be constructed simultaneously with the renovation of the theater. Therefore, it will likely be linked to it, although the garage's construction has been designed and has a valid zoning decision. The theater's renovation began last year with the modernization of stage technology and is set to continue this year and next year.
In Brno, there is a shortage of parking spaces, with around 4,500 spaces missing in the city center.
