Brno - Brno may build a parking garage on Panenská Street next to the town hall without the company Brno Parking, which was co-founded for this purpose. The company has failed to obtain a valid zoning decision for the construction in almost six years since its inception. On Friday, the commitment of Brno to lease the land on which the garage is to be built will expire. The matter was discussed today by the city councilors. Since they did not extend the validity of the future lease agreement, the city will release itself from its obligation to the company on Friday, said the mayor's deputy Robert Kotzian (ODS) today. They will decide on the next steps later. The construction of the parking garage on Panenská Street was supposed to increase the number of parking spaces in the center. At the same time, it was intended to help free one of the main spaces in the center - Dominican Square in front of the New Town Hall - from cars. Today, it resembles a large parking lot, while architectural studies lie with the city hall on how to transform it into a dignified urban space suitable for relaxation and appreciating monuments. According to Kotzian, several scenarios may emerge for how to build the parking garage. According to one of them, the city will no longer cooperate with the company Brno Parking, in which it has a one-third share, but will try to find another partner. The second option is to continue mutual cooperation, but under new conditions. The third option is to reassess the city’s stake; for example, Brno could increase its share in the company, thus having greater influence on developments and decision-making. Specific decisions are to be made by the councilors based on the documents currently being prepared. According to the deputy, the councilors will continue to strive for the construction of public garages. The construction itself should not be affected by the city's current lower budget revenues. "No one has ever counted on this being an investment from the budget of the city of Brno. It is a question of finding a private investor," Kotzian said. He will apparently try to set the conditions so that interested parties can be found. According to the expiring contract, the city was to contribute the land and the private partner to ensure the project and construction. However, last year it was already mentioned by former members of the city leadership that the city might have to contribute to the construction. There is a shortage of about 4,500 parking spaces in the center of Brno.
