Brno will build a new parking house on Veselá Street for 228 million

The Janáček Cultural Center will be built later.

Brno - A three-story underground parking garage will begin construction at Veselá Street in the center of Brno at the beginning of next year. It will cost approximately 228 million crowns and will have 191 parking spaces. It could start serving motorists in 2015, said Petr Kratochvíl, Chairman of the Board of Brněnské komunikace, to ČTK today. Above the parking will likely be built the Janáček Cultural Center with a concert hall later.
    Brno, like other cities, is struggling with a lack of parking spaces in the center. Motorists currently have access to a parking garage on Kounicova Street. Therefore, the city plans to build three more in the coming years: on Panenská, Kopečná, and Veselá streets.
    These should be operated by the municipal company Brněnské komunikace. The underground parking facility will be located next to the Besední House and the International Hotel. This area is currently a neglected part of the city used as a parking lot. Its future appearance is not yet known. Musicians have long been calling for the construction of the Janáček Cultural Center (JKC) with a spacious concert hall.
    The underground garages on Veselá Street will be built in such a way that a five- to six-story building can be erected above them. However, its design and costs are not yet known. Before construction begins, the space above the garages will be altered into a square with greenery.
    "Whether it will be exactly the JKC is not certain yet. It will depend on whether and how funds can be raised for the project," said Libor Šťástka (ODS), Mayor of Brno-střed, to ČTK today.
