Kladno – The building of the Kladno train station is set for demolition, to be replaced by a new facility with multifunctional space. According to earlier plans, builders were supposed to renovate the station during the ongoing modernization of the railway in Kladno. The poor condition of the original building was revealed by supplemental surveys, the spokesperson for the Railway Administration, Nela Eberl Friebová, informed today in a press release.
The supplementary survey could not be conducted during the preparation of the modernization project for the railway and station, as the condition for its execution was the complete clearance of the building. The measurement results then showed complications in the foundations and also the presence of groundwater. "Given the significantly worse condition of the building compared to expectations, it was necessary to consider other options, among which the construction of a new hall turned out to be the best solution," said the General Director of the Railway Administration, Jiří Svoboda.
Then a study for the new building was created, commissioned by the Railway Administration along with Kladno. This was followed by an evaluation of various factors including costs, which indicated that it would be ideal to build the check-in hall closer to the newly emerging underpass. "When the actual condition of the original building became evident, we decided, together with colleagues in the city leadership, to clearly support a new, modern, and functional solution with lower energy consumption, which can also bring considerable operational savings. The submitted study looks very good from our perspective," stated Kladno mayor Milan Volf (Choice for Kladno).
Kladno opposition council member Anna Gamanová (STAN) created a petition in January, which, among other things, calls for Kladno and the Railway Administration to try to preserve and reconstruct the station, or to announce an architectural competition in case of demolition. More than 400 people have signed it as of today; Kladno has nearly 70,000 residents.
According to the mayor, the proposed form of the station meets the city's requirement for the highest architectural quality and compliance with modern demands. The Railway Administration will now follow up on the conceptual study by preparing project documentation. A tender for the contractor of construction work will follow.
Last year, the modernization of the section between the Kladno main station and the Ostrovec stop began in full swing. The section will be double-track and electrified after reconstruction. The Kladno railway section is part of the route between Kladno, Prague, and Václav Havel Airport in Prague. The Railway Administration plans to commence operations in Kladno in September next year. The renewal of the more than five-kilometer Kladno section of the track and adjacent buildings will cost approximately 3.7 billion crowns excluding VAT, including underpasses, platforms, and similar facilities.
