Prague - DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague's Holešovice district is to be expanded with additional spaces within two years. Its operators want to broaden their current activities to include other disciplines, such as theater and film, which would primarily develop the themes of the ongoing exhibition projects, said DOX spokesperson Michaela Šilpochová to ČTK. To increase capacity, DOX has purchased an adjacent building on Poupětova Street.

DOX was opened in late 2008 by Leoš Válka and his partners as a gallery focused exclusively on contemporary art. The center quickly gained respect on the domestic scene, having organized over a hundred exhibitions, and the number of accompanying and educational events is approaching a thousand. DOX curators generally seek themes with social relevance and are not afraid of art with a distinctly political context.
Interest in exhibiting and holding events at DOX is enormous, especially considering the situation in Prague's exhibition halls and galleries. For this reason, the intention to expand the center has been in place for some time. Now, it should be possible to realize it with the new building.
The design is to be created according to a project by renowned architect Petr Hájek. It will likely remain a separate building externally, while being connected internally with the current DOX. The adjacent building will primarily house a new multifunctional hall with a capacity of up to 500 people, intended for theatrical performances, performances, film screenings, conferences, or music productions. NEW DOX, as the new building is currently referred to in discussions with the authorities, is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.
The creation of the DOX center is well-known - Leoš Válka, upon returning to the Czech Republic from abroad, was looking for suitable properties as a developer, and the former factory on Osadní Street was set to be transformed into apartments and lofts. However, the industrial space enchanted Válka in 2002, and he envisioned it as a future gallery. He had a clear idea of its architectural solution, which was fulfilled by Ivan Kroupa, with whom Válka had previously worked. The corner building of DOX will now connect with the neighboring building of the former Czech Woodworking Plant, which the shareholders of DOX purchased for 100 million crowns.
The owners of the DOX center, besides director Válka, also include co-owners of the RSJ firm Václav Dejčmar, Karel Janeček, and Libor Winkler, who support multiple projects in the fields of culture, science, and show business.
