Czech Brod continues preparations for a large-scale renovation of the square in the historic center

Český Brod – Český Brod in the Kolín region continues preparations for a large-scale reconstruction of the Arnošt z Pardubic Square and Husova Square in the urban conservation area. The transformation of both squares, estimated to cost 290 million crowns, recently obtained a building permit. In the coming weeks, the city plans to announce a competition for the contractor. A grant from the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) program for the Prague metropolitan area has been promised to cover part of the costs. The reconstruction is expected to take place from 2027 to 2028, said Mayor Tomáš Klinecký (Lepší Brod) to ČTK.

The renewal of the dual squares, the design of which emerged two years ago from an architectural competition, is expected by the city to contribute to calming traffic and strengthening the role of the squares as spaces for gathering and hosting cultural and community events.

"Today, the squares are largely occupied by cars in a disorganized manner, driving and parking over the majority of the area. The new design will be more organized, even though a large number of parking spaces will remain on the square," Klinecký said. Three new recreational areas will be created, for example, in front of the town hall and near the bell tower. The renovations will include wider sidewalks, tree planting, permeable surfaces, and a new square surface that will combine different types of pavements. The traffic solution anticipates leading car traffic predominantly around the perimeter of the squares.

The square, covering an area of two hectares, encompasses the entire historic site of the town. "We do not have – as in most other historic towns – an outer ring of streets; the walls were just behind the first row of houses," Klinecký said. The project also includes extensive renewal of underground engineering networks, including a rainwater management system.
