Prague - In recent days, employees of the demolition company cleared the Dejvice Hotel Prague and began its demolition. They are cutting the hotel's structure with special equipment and lowering pieces of the building to the ground, where they are sorting the debris. Representatives of PPF, the owner of the hotel and the surrounding land, informed ČTK about this today. They refused to disclose the timeline for the work. A school and a park are to be created in the area. All work is to be completed by the investor within one year.
The demolition of the hotel was permitted by the building authority of Prague 6. No one appealed against its decision within the statutory period. Immediately after the appeal period expired, work in the area began in January. "In the first phase, it was necessary to clear the internal spaces of the building, such as dismantling utilities or removing asbestos constructions," PPF stated in response to an email inquiry from ČTK. The demolition company built a temporary road for access to the site and installed noise barriers.
"Work continues with the help of special technology that gradually separates materials from the building's structure through cutting," PPF reported. The demolition company previously stated that instead of regular blasting, it would use a special technology that would reduce the noise and dust from the work. Workers are sorting the debris and recycling it at the demolition site. Some of the material will be used for backfill in underground spaces. "The detailed schedule is not intended for publication," the investor stated.
According to information published on the website, demolition work, including debris removal and landscaping, is expected to last five months based on preliminary estimates. The demolition of the hotel itself is expected to take about three and a half months.
The owner wants to restore a park at the hotel site, which existed in the area until the 1970s. However, the greenery will no longer be accessible to the public as it was in the past. In place of the garages, there will be a connection with the neighboring property and the Hadovka site. The investor plans to build a primary school and the Open Gate high school here, similar to the one in Babice near Prague. Email addresses and a free telephone line are available for the residents of Hanspaulka. More information can be found on the project's website.
The Prague Hotel was built at the end of the 1970s. Until November 1989, it served the needs of the Communist Party and the Czechoslovak government. Many perceive it as a symbol of the pre-1989 era. Opinions among the general public and professionals on the demolition of the hotel vary. Some disagree with the demolition, considering the hotel a unique building. Others argue that it is an average piece of architecture. PPF points out that the building is oversized and uneconomical.
