Prague - The under-construction Dvorecký Bridge in Prague will be adorned with neocubist sculptures featuring water elements and special lighting. The five artworks will cost the capital approximately 8.53 million crowns. This was announced by the spokesperson of the city hall, Vít Hofman. The purchase has already been approved by the city councilors. The Dvorecký Bridge will connect Prague 4 and 5 and is set to be completed in the autumn of 2025. The construction began last September and will cost nearly 1.1 billion crowns.
"A so-called light botanical garden will grow under the newly emerging Dvorecký Bridge. Thus, Prague will have another attractive place that will serve not only our fellow citizens but also foreign tourists, as the selected works come from artists around the world. The botanical garden will offer another connection between public space and culture. I see it as a great use of open space for artistic activity," said the mayor's deputy Jiří Pospíšil (TOP 09).
The bridge is being built in a style referencing Czech cubism and its contribution to the history of architecture and art. Among the artworks will be a neocubist concrete sculpture called Heavy Head Boy with an electronically controlled water system. According to the city's leadership, the sculptures are intended not only to enhance the decoration of the bridge but also to complement the newly emerging public spaces with artistic elements and functional furniture.
On the Smíchov side of the bridge, a light garden called Light Removes Darkness will be created, where instead of trees, there will be 120 different public lighting lamps from around the world, including from Jakarta, Luxembourg, and Azerbaijan. The project was designed by artist Krištof Kintera. On the Podolí side, there will be a swimming area, space for concerts and theatrical performances, a skate park, or a climbing wall.
The bridge will serve trams, buses, cyclists, and pedestrians, and first responders will also be able to cross it. The eastern exit will be at the northern edge of the Žluté lázně area, and the western one near the Lihovar tram stop. The length will be 388 meters and the width 16 meters.
