Prague – Experts on social issues welcome the Constitutional Court's decision to abolish so-called non-subsidy zones. According to them, this decision could have come sooner than four years, during which time areas without housing benefit payments were expanded across the Czech Republic, and people in need were moving between cities. The solution is to ensure more affordable housing. This was stated to ČTK by Vít Lesák, director of the Platform for Social Housing, and Alena Zieglerová, head of the Institute for Social Inclusion (IPSI). Representatives of organizations that assist people in need have long criticized these zones.
According to IPSI, 107 cities and municipalities established or considered declaring non-subsidy zones. In the Moravian-Silesian region, there were 25, as well as in Ústí. These zones exist in all regions. In these zones, new applicants do not receive housing supplements. They often do not have money for rent and have to move elsewhere.
