Plzeň - Plzeň's FC Viktoria will pay for the construction of two towers at the city's football stadium in Štruncovy sady, which is expected to cost between 50 and 60 million crowns. The construction of corner towers between the main stand and the side terraces was promised by the club to the city in January if they reached the group stage of the Champions League, which they did. The city hall will reach an agreement with Viktoria on the specific completion of the stadium within a few weeks. It will be purely an investment by Viktoria; the city will not contribute a single crown, said Petr Rund (ODS), the city’s technical deputy mayor, to ČTK.
"The timetable for the completion is not set, but it is in the interest of both the city and Viktoria. They want to have the stadium finished and want to utilize the facilities of the towers," he stated. One tower will house the club's facilities, while the other will host a commercial project such as a fan shop, whirlpool, sauna, massages, restaurant, and physiotherapy. They will mainly serve the club and the public; Viktoria will operate them, Rund said.
The city presented the club with options for completing the towers and settling property issues in connection with the new Civil Code. "In a few weeks, we will meet and discuss how we will proceed,” Rund said. One of the crucial questions is whether FC Viktoria will want to make adjustments to the documentation for the building permit, in which the club participated. The estimated cost according to the project is 50 to 60 million crowns, but the question is whether the club will want to change the structure of the floors and activities in the towers.
"The building permit is issued, and if property relations are resolved, construction could start after an internal tender following the end of the season, that is, in May 2014. It could be completed by May 2015," Rund stated.
Plzeň has invested 350 million CZK in the reconstruction of the stadium over more than two years. In addition to the towers, they want to complete the last block on the southern stand, which would close the entire stadium. Its capacity would thus increase from 11,700 seats by 500 to 800. This would cost about 15 million CZK. It has not yet been decided whether it will be a city investment. "We will still discuss with the club. The stadium is functional even without this segment,” Rund added.
Thanks to their advancement to the Champions League group stage, Plzeň's FC Viktoria has already earned approximately 280 million crowns.
