Havlíčkův Brod

Havlíčkův Brod - The Church of St. Catherine in Havlíčkův Brod, with its Gothic foundations, needs repairs costing about six million crowns. Its technical condition, especially the roof, is very poor according to Father Oldřich Kučera. The church is included in the Program for the Rescue of Architectural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture. The Epigram association is also trying to raise funds for its repair through a public collection. The city of Havlíčkův Brod has decided to contribute one million crowns to the repair.

"A big thank you goes to the thirteen councilors who supported the repair. The technical condition of the church is bad and unsuitable. The roof is leaky in many places, the truss is rotten and does not meet any standards, and it is infested with wood rot,"
said Kučera.

According to him, the church is empty, and a temporary repair of the staircase has already been completed. Services are held there once a week, and the cultural program is organized by the Epigram association, which established the public collection for its repair in December 2017. The public has already contributed more than 140,000 crowns. The Ministry of Culture has managed to secure 390,000 crowns for this year.

The parish of Havlíčkův Brod manages, in addition to the Church of St. Catherine, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of St. Vojtěch, the Church of the Holy Trinity with the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and the rectory building in Havlíčkův Brod, as well as other surrounding parishes in Šlapanov, Pohled, and Skuhrov.

The Church of St. Catherine is first mentioned in written sources at the beginning of the 14th century, but it is probably older. It stood at the only bridge over the Sázava River outside the city walls, just like the hospital founded in the mid-13th century. It was destroyed by the Hussites in 1422. It was rebuilt, but in the 17th century, it burned down several times and was subsequently damaged by a flood. It was successfully rebuilt again in 1728. The interior retains sculptures of St. Sebastian and Roch, an altar from the 17th century, and a painting of St. Catherine of Alexandria from the 18th century.
