Brno - The historical boathouse in Brno-Jundrov, located on Veslařská Street, which was declared a cultural monument last year, will not be undergoing repairs for the time being. Masaryk University, which owns it, lacks funds for the reconstruction. This follows from a statement by the university. The building is currently infested with wood-destroying fungi.

"Due to the decrease in public budgets for higher education and the earmarked nature of budgets linked to science, the university must prioritize securing funding for basic activities, which are teaching and research," said Masaryk University spokesperson Tereza Fojtová.

The building is in poor condition, especially the spiral staircase. The wood, which is the load-bearing element of the entire structure, is infested with wood-destroying fungi. "If a meaningful use of the monument-protected building and a source of funding for the necessary reconstruction can be found, the university will advocate for its realization," Fojtová added.

The building, from the second half of the 19th century, served as a storage facility for boats, a social room for meetings of members, and also as a caretaker's apartment. The structure was later supplemented with a glass pavilion, which presumably was used for observing rowing competitions on the river. However, that does not stand today.

In the part of today's Jundrov where the boathouse stands, rowing competitions were held in the past. Purely German clubs, Jewish clubs, and eventually Czech rowers had their base here. The boathouse is located by the Svratka River, where Olympic champion Miroslava Knapková also began her training.

Competitions returned to the Svratka last autumn. The first contest of eights between the two largest universities in Brno was won by representatives of the Brno University of Technology. They defeated their competitors from Masaryk University by approximately the length of one boat, despite the fact that the defeated team included experienced Olympian Oldřich Hejdůšek as the coxswain.
