Hradec Králové – Hradec Králové is changing plans for the reconstruction of the Střezina Elementary Art School, which, with costs of nearly 300 million crowns, is one of the city's largest planned investments. The city council has decided that one of the main buildings, which is to include a music pavilion, will not be repaired due to its dilapidation but will be rebuilt. The city expects that the construction of a new music pavilion could cost around 88 million crowns, said city spokesperson Kateřina Šmídová today.

The Střezina Elementary Art School is the largest school of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is attended by more than 2000 students. It is currently functioning in temporary premises in a former pavilion elementary school in Slezské Předměstí and has been waiting for its modern building for a quarter of a century. So far, the city's many years of efforts to provide quality facilities for students and teachers have not been fulfilled.

The construction of the music pavilion will be part of the second phase of the school's reconstruction. The city is now having the second phase designed, and the project creators will incorporate the change for the music pavilion into the plans. "The cost of building the music pavilion comes out almost the same as if we were only completing the construction," said Deputy Mayor for Investments Jiří Bláha.

The entire second phase of repairs is estimated by the city to cost around 200 million crowns. In addition to the construction of the music pavilion, it also includes the reconstruction of the entrance building with offices and the renovations of the classical music pavilion and the popular music pavilion.

For the first phase of the school's reconstruction, the city is already preparing a tender for a construction company. The city hall would like to announce the competition in the spring and to begin the reconstruction this year. The first phase is expected to create pavilions for visual arts and dance, and the builders should also construct a new connecting corridor. The city hall estimates the cost of the first phase at 70 to 80 million crowns.

In January 2018, the city began the reconstruction of the school for 200 million crowns, but the work subsequently faced significant delays. The city hall decided to terminate the contract with the construction company Prima. The company subsequently withdrew from the contract itself, justifying it with poor project documentation presented by the city. In March 2019, the company handed the construction site back to the city. The city hall then began a review of the entire project and started preparing the construction anew.
