Hradec Králové - The second phase of the reconstruction of the Střezina Elementary Art School (ZUŠ) in Hradec Králové will be carried out by the Hradec construction company Stako for 137 million crowns excluding VAT. As the winner of the tender, it was approved today by the Hradec city council. The price is a quarter lower than the 178 million crowns excluding VAT, which is the amount the city anticipated before the competition. ZUŠ Střezina has 2,400 students and is the largest school of its kind in the Czech Republic.

The extensive reconstruction of the school began after many years of preparation in January 2022 and is among the largest current investment projects in the city. The school had mostly been located in an unsuitable former pavilion primary school in the Slezské Předměstí. It has been waiting for a modern building for a quarter of a century. Years ago, a petition for the completion of the school was created, which was signed by thousands of people.

The second phase of the reconstruction will follow the first phase, which was carried out by the Hradec company Valc in 2022 and 2023 for 81 million crowns excluding VAT. Valc placed second in the tender for the second phase with a price 885,000 crowns higher than Stako.

The second phase of the reconstruction includes the renovation and extension of the modern music pavilion, the renovation of the classical music pavilion, and the reconstruction of the entrance area and offices as well as the school's facilities. The city aims to start construction in the spring. The second phase should also proceed in parts, as it will take place during the school's operation. It is expected to be completed in 2027.

The final, third phase will involve the construction of a concert pavilion with two halls for theater and music, which will replace the current building with two gymnasiums. The third phase should also include the construction of a parking lot.

The city previously attempted to reconstruct the school in 2018 unsuccessfully. However, the work encountered significant delays, and the city council decided to terminate the contract with the construction company Prima. The company subsequently withdrew from the contract, which was worth 200 million crowns, citing poor project documentation provided by the city. In March 2019, the company returned the construction site to the city. The city council then initiated a review of the entire project and began preparing the construction anew.
