Jihlava - Jihlava is considering building a mobile ice rink for about 35 million crowns. This is a backup option for the period when the city would like to demolish the aging Horácký Winter Stadium and build a new multifunctional arena in its place. Jihlava's city council today allocated one million crowns for the mobile rink projects. As councilor David Beke (ODS) told ČTK, the decision does not mean that the city will actually build the mobile sports facility.

Preparations for the construction of the mobile ice rink, according to the councilor, could take up to 1.5 years. "By the time we need it, we must already have everything designed, building permits issued, and so on. We cannot just start solving the situation then," he said.

The city anticipates that the mobile sports facility, measuring approximately 30 by 60 meters, could be needed from 2022 for two or three years. A location for it has been designated at the football field in Sokolovská Street. According to the material discussed by the city council, this mobile rink with a roof could temporarily serve, for example, for youth ice hockey training or schools.

According to the councilor, this facility could be a solution in case it turns out to be a cheaper option than having children from Jihlava travel to other sports facilities. The city might also need the mobile rink if, for some reason, it becomes necessary to shut down the current smaller ice hall next to the Horácký Stadium. "So that at least one ice rink in Jihlava can operate," Beke said.

This is one of the steps Jihlava is taking in preparation for the construction of a new multifunctional arena with estimated costs up to 750 million crowns. An architectural competition for this arena is currently underway.

The Horácký Winter Stadium was built in 1956, and the lifespan of its roof is nearing its end. The construction of the multifunctional hall at the site of the old stadium in the center was approved by the councilors last December.
